Palm Sunday
Borriquita: His first outing was in 1945 with a single step. It was the first brotherhood to procession leaving a church, that of San José, which is located outside the historic center of Cadiz. Stripped : The Brotherhood was founded on May 15, 2007. The blessing of the image of Christ, the work of the Córdoba sculptor Francisco Romero Zafra, took place on December 14, 2008. Penas : Its first processional station was held in 1956. It came to procession using wheels for movement instead of traditional porters. Its titular images are the Lord of Sorrows by Álvarez Duarte (1985) and the Virgin of Charity by Manuel Pineda Calderón (1964), later restored by Álvarez Duarte himself, leaving from the Parish of San Lorenzo, on Sagasta Street, near the Food Market.
Humility and Patience : Its titular images are the Holy Christ of Humility and Patience, a masterful work by Jacinto Pimentel (1638) and Our Lady of Bitterness by Sebastián Santos Rojas (1967) enthroned in a magnificent canopy step. Known as the brotherhood of the Biscayans. It was the pioneer brotherhood in incorporating women into its ranks of Nazarenes, its promoter being the remembered Ana Chulián Cesar, leaving from the Parish of San Agustín, in the Plaza de San Agustín.
Holy Monday
La Palma: In the Popular neighborhood of La Viña and more specifically in the Church of La Palma, this arch-confraternity is located. The titular images are the Holy Christ of Mercy, remodeled by the image maker Francisco Buiza and the Virgin of Sorrows. The brotherhood owns the canopy that was once the Sevillian brotherhood of the Negritos. That of Christ is in the gilding process, its carving being by the famous Antonio Martín. The Brotherhood is merged with the Archconfraternity of La Palma, which makes its processional departure on November 1, coinciding with the anniversary of the Lisbon tsunami that occurred on November 1, 1755 and which severely affected the city. Accompanies the Christ of Mercy, the sounds of CCTT Vera Cruz de Utrera and the Virgin of Sorrows by the Band of the Cigarreras of Seville.
Arrest : Merged with the Royal Congregation of Vela (1792) three months after its creation in 1979, processioning that same year. Its titular images are the Señor del Prendimiento, work of Alfonso Berraquero García (1978) and the Virgen del Patrocinio, work of the 18th century, transformed into Dolorosa, leaving from the Church of Carmen, in the Alameda de Apodaca.
Nazareno del Amor : Its foundation dates back to November 1, 1951. The titular images are Jesús Nazareno del Amor, the work of the Sevillian image maker José Rivera and made in the first decade of the forties of the last century, and Our Lady of Hope, made by the Cadiz image maker Luis Jiménez, but completely remodeled by the image maker Alfonso Berraquero from the neighboring town of San Fernando in 1976. Of great interest are the vents of the canopy, made by Juan Carlos Romero with minor imagery by Luis González Rey. He is known as the White Nazarene, as he wears a tunic of that color in all his processional outings except for the one in 1982, leaving from the Conventual Church of San Francisco, in the Plaza de San Francisco.
Vera-Cruz: The titular images are the Holy Christ of the True Cross and Our Lady of Soledad. It is the dean Brotherhood of Cádiz, founded in 1566 by Fray Juan Navarro. He lost a large part of his heritage during the English assault on Cádiz in 1596. The "Sleeping Emperor" is attributed to Giusseppe Picano (1773) and the procession in its grandiose Rococo style Christ Passage is made by Antonio Martín. El Caído : Its founding date corresponds to 1944. Health : It was the first Brotherhood to leave the old Cathedral of Cádiz at dawn, (00:00 h) Santa Cruz, in the Plaza Fray Félix, until 2010. It represents the encounter of Jesus with the women on the street of The bitterness came from Calvary. Their images are Ntro. Father Jesús del Mayor Dolor by the Cadiz image maker Miguel Láinez Capote and María Santísima de la Salud by Francisco Buiza. Las Aguas : Founded in 1944. The titular images are the Stmo. Prayer in the Garden : Founded in 1955. Its titular images are Ntro. Father Jesus of Prayer in the Garden by Manuel Ramos Corona (1989) and Our Lady of Grace and Hope by Luis González Rey (1997), Due to the difficulties in leaving through the main door of its temple, the Brotherhood since 1983 has held its processional departure in a chapel from which it begins its penitential journey every Holy Thursday attached to the Parish of San Severiano. Her marches are Señora de Puerta-Tierra composed by Julio Pardo Meyero and Llena estars de Gracia by Juan Antonio Verdía Díaz. Afflicted : Founded by Bishop Armengual in the same parish where San Lorenzo resides, on Sagasta Street, in 1726. It was the first Cadiz brotherhood to use the Sevillian mystery step. The titular images are the Nazarene of the Afflicted and the Most Holy Mary of the Heartbroken, made by Flamenco, Peter Sterling. The only step of the brotherhood represents the meeting of Jesus with his Mother on the street of Bitterness. His marches are Afflicted by Juan José Puntas in 2005, Nuestro Padre de los Affligidos by José Miralles in 1983 and Virgen de los Desconsuelos by Julio Pardo Melero in 1999.
Medinaceli: Until 2010, the Brotherhood made the Penitence Station at 2 in the morning and the second departure from the Church of Santa Cruz took place, in the Plaza Fray Félix, in the Madrugá of Cádiz. Brotherhood founded to give greater worship to an image of Madrid's Medinaceli. It was such a devotion that an image resembling its namesake in Madrid was soon commissioned. It has a magnificent silver step of Christ. The images are Our Father Jesus Captive and Rescued by the Cadiz image maker Miguel Láinez Capote and María Santísima de la Trinidad by the Sevillian Francisco Buiza. Nazarene: Also popularly known as "El Greñúo" or "El Señor de Cádiz", it was founded around 1500 in the convent of San Francisco and was moved to its chapel in 1616 in the Santa María neighborhood. Its titular images are Jesús Nazareno (perpetual ruler of Cádiz), a work by Sevillian Andrés de Castillejo from the 16th century, and Our Lady of Sorrows, carved in 1944 by José Luis Vassallo Parodi. It is one of the Brotherhoods of the silver cup that has the greatest popular devotion and demonstrates it in its very long penance that accompanies the Lord.
Good Friday, Early morning
Although all the brotherhoods that leave on Holy Thursday gather up well into the early hours of the morning, there are many others that begin their procession a few hours later, in the early hours of Friday morning. Until 2010, there were 4 Brotherhoods that did Penance Station in the early morning. In 2011 it remains in 2 Brotherhoods since the Brotherhood of Health will carry out the Station of Penance in 2011 on the day of Holy Tuesday and the Brotherhood of Medinaceli will do the same on the day of Holy Thursday. Descent : Dates from 1666. Initially founded in the Convent of Candelaria, moved to Santo Domingo, it suffered a fire in 1936 from which it was able to preserve the owner's mask. It left in a procession from the church of Our Lady of Carmen and later settled in the church of San Lorenzo Mártir, on Sagasta Street, where it was reorganized in 1969, provisionally transferred to San Pablo during the restoration works of its current headquarters. of San Lorenzo Martyr. The titular images are made by the Sevillian image maker Francisco Buiza and are the Stmo. Christ of the Descent and Our Lady of Sorrows. It leaves just before dawn, being the first since 2011 to enter the Cathedral. She is accompanied in her procession in the early hours of Good Friday by a musical chapel. He intends to hold a penance station on Holy Saturday.
El Perdón: Founded on March 9, 1935 in the parish of La Merced, its titular image disappearing in the fire of 1936, commissioning Láinez Capote to create the new owner. The current images are the Holy Christ of Forgiveness by the image maker of the town of San Roque, Luis Ortega Brú and María Santísima del Rosario in her Sorrowful Mysteries by Francisco Buiza, having one of the most complete palliums of the Cadiz Holy Week, with the processional mantle of the Lady. Until 2010, three of the four Brotherhoods of the early morning processioned from the Parish of Santa Cruz and this was the last Brotherhood to leave this Parish tonight. Currently it closes the processions of this day. It is the musical counterpoint to all the previous ones to go through the official career. The step of mystery is the moment of Forgiveness to the Good Thief Dimas, before his Mother, Saint John, the Magdalene and the Bad Thief (Gestas). Dawn in Santa Cruz marks the entrance of the brotherhood, at 10:30 in the morning. It is the only one that has no intention of abandoning its departure day, which it has been since its foundation.
Holy Friday
Expiration: Its titular images are the Holy Christ Expiration and Mary Most Holy of Victory. The carving of the Santísimo Cristo Expiración belongs to the Genoese school that worked in Cádiz in the 18th century, being attributed to Domenico María Giscardi. For its part, the painful one is the work of Carlos Emilio Bartús Loreto, from 1940, an image that was remodeled by Luis González Rey in 1988, it comes from the Parish and Military Church of Santo Ángel Cutodio, next to the Gran Teatro Falla, where it is performed the Cádiz group competition.
Servites: Its titular image is Our Lady of Sorrows Crowned and is attributed to the Genoese school of the 18th century, its author being unknown to date. The Virgin of Sorrows was crowned on September 17, 2011, being the first painful image to be canonically crowned in Cádiz, and leaves from the Parish of San Lorenzo Mártir, on Calle Sagasta.
Thirst: Its titular images are the Seven Words of the Most Holy Christ of Thirst, made into a new image by Luis González Rey in 2007, and María Santísima de la Piedad, made into a new image in 2005 by Luis González Rey. It leaves from the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Merced, in the Plaza de la Merced.
Buena Muerte (The Silence) : The images are the Holy Christ of the Good Death, an anonymous work dating from 1648, having been attributed to such notable authors as Alonso Cano, Martínez Montañés, Alonso Martínez or José de Arce. It was restored by José Miguel Sánchez Peña in 1986, and María Santísima del Mayor Dolor, is attributed to Blas Molner, who carried it out in 1761, a fact that has not been verified to date and is currently still being investigated. The image was donated to the Parish by Fray Juan de Ulloa, it leaves from the Parish of San Agustín, in the Plaza de San Agustín.
Ecce Mater Tua : Penance Section of the Marian Congregations, the painful one, in full size, is the work of Domingo Sánchez Mesa from Granada, made in 1955. She is shown standing on a mountain dressed entirely in black, without any embroidery, with her arms extended and looking towards the sky, showing the total loneliness of the Mother after the death of her Son. It was restored by José Miguel Sánchez Peña, who eliminated some previous repainting, and leaves from the Church of Santiago Apóstol, on Santiago Street, although it leaves through the door that leads to Plaza Pío XII.
Holy Saturday
Holy Burial : The images are Our Lady of Solitude and Holy Burial of Our Lady. Lord Jesus Christ, Our Lady of Solitude is an anonymous work, possibly from the 18th century; The numerous restorations undergone by the image mean that it has lost its primitive features. Among those carried out in the 20th century we can highlight those of Miguel Láinez, who created a new set of separate hands (since he had them intertwined), Francisco Buiza (who makes new hands) and that of Luis Álvarez Duarte. In 2003 it was restored by Francisco Javier Geraldía Capurro. This Dolorosa became Patroness of Cádiz for many years. The image of Jesús Yacente is documented as the work of the sculptor Francisco de Villegas, from 1624, in cedar wood, although possibly in the 18th century a new head of Genoese roots was adapted to it, it comes from the Church of Santa Cruz, in Plaza Fray Felix.
Easter Sunday
The Risen Lord: The image is that of the Risen Lord, the current carving of the Risen Lord is the work of Luis González Rey from 1993, who in 1997 restored it by applying various improvements. Previously, an image attributed to the Genoese sculptor Domenico Giscardi, made in the 18th century, which was restored in 1960 by Francisco Buiza Fernández, was in procession, leaving from the Parish of San Antonio, in the Plaza de San Antonio.
